New START treaty essential to stable U.S./Russia relationship

The League of Women Voters pressed the U.S. Senate to approve the New START treaty in a letter to the editor in The New York Times Saturday.
Senator George V. Voinovich (R-OH) expressed reservations about the treaty in an Associated Press article published this morning in The Columbus Dispatch.
According to League National President Elisabeth MacNamara, "The treaty would not only reduce the number of deployed nuclear weapons in both the United States and Russia but could also influence other nations to follow suit."
MacNamara pointed to support for the treaty from high-ranking members of all presidential administrations since Nixon.
