LWVUS Action Alert: Stop Dark Money, Protect the League
Monday, Feb. 24, 2014
Voters Guides: That's what the League of Women Voters is best known for. Generations of voters have relied on the League's voters guides for nonpartisan information on the candidates and issues. People appreciate that the League never supports or opposes candidates or political parties, and we don't edit the candidates' responses to questions.
VOTERS GUIDES ARE IN JEOPARDY. In response to the flood of secret or "dark" money that allowed political operatives like Karl Rove on the right and Bill Burton on the left to raise and spend unlimited amounts in candidate elections, the IRS has proposed very significant changes to the activities that 501(c)(4) political organizations can carry out. And that's good. By stopping 501(c)(4) organizations from spending on “candidate-related political activity,” the IRS can stop the abuse in its tracks.
BUT the current proposal would undermine the ability of the League (which is also a 501(c)(4) organization) to conduct truly nonpartisan voter service activities across the country, because the IRS proposal DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY EXCEPTION FOR TRULY NONPARTISAN VOTER SERVICE. This is a terrible mistake, both for voters and for our democracy.
The national League of Women Voters has submitted comments to the IRS on the proposal, but WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please contact the IRS and urge them to keep pushing to stop the dark money but to make sure that Leagues can continue our truly nonpartisan voter service work.
