Yvette McGee Brown - 2015 DIA Award Recipient
The 2015 Democracy In Action Award honoring Yvette McGee Brown was a splendid event. With delicious food at OSU's Fawcett Center, and lovely music provided by xYz Winds, guests mingled with the honoree and each other before viewing a slide show of Yvette's family and professional life.-Anne Hammerstein led the program with relevant League history and an invitation to become a member. Chuck White ably served as emcee. The crowd heard funny, touching, and inspiring remarks about the honoree from Honorary Co-Chairs Archie Griffin, Gale King, David Kaufman, and Elizabeth Kessler. Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court Maureen O'Connor presented the award, and she included in her warm remarks about Yvette her own satisfaction in working with the League on improving citizen access to information about judicial candidates. Finally, Yvette's infectious laugh punctuated her thanks to her Honorary Co-Chairs and the League.  -Throughout the evening, stories had been told about Yvette's parallels with Ohio's last African American Supreme Court Justice, Robert Duncan. At age 17, Yvette had called Judge Duncan to let him know that she disagreed with his ruling on school desegregation, because it would "disrupt her teenage life." He met with her, and though he remained unswayed that the decision was one of the proudest of his judicial career, maintained a friendship with her throughout his life. Yvette seemed particularly moved to find out that Judge Duncan had also received the Democracy In Action Award, in 2005.-Thanks go to the evening's sponsors: Patriot Level Sponsor - Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company; Civic Level Sponsors - The Motorists Insurance Group, Honda of America Mfg., Inc., L Brands Foundation, The Ohio State University; Supporting Level Sponsor - Cardinal Health; and Additional Sponsors - American Electric Power, Wolfe Enterprises, Worthington Industries Foundation, and The Crane Group.-Thanks to the Democracy In Action Team, chaired by Gloria Davis, Anne Nelson & Beth Taggart: Mim Brierley, Ann Bohman, Lucy Buzzee, Kitty Burcsu, Esther Connors, Zita Divis, Lauren Elliott-Dorans, Anne Hammerstein, Mary Kaul, Pat Larson, Joan Lawrence, Donna Marie Lossing-Jones, Barb McAdam Muller, Karin O'Neil, Dave Patton, Corey Roscoe, Peg Rosenfield, Kay Skopin, Brent Taggart, Margaret Wright, Stuart Wright, and Jane Young.
